Turin and its magic

Elegant, charming and a bit mysterious. Turin has a reputation as a dynamic and industrious city, but behind this modern face it hides many small treasures to be discovered: its historic cafes, hot chocolate or bicerin are ritual, its squares, the salons of the Torino bene.

There is medieval Turin, the one between Porta Palazzo, the Duomo and Piazza della Repubblica; magical and esoteric Turin, between Piazza Castello, the Gardensand and Palazzo Reale; the Turin of kings that tells the story of the Savoy family and the Unification of Italy; the Turin of cinemas that reveals the city’s more artistic soul; the Turin heart of baroque with the Corona di Delizie, that is, the circuit of Royal Residences declared World Heritage Sites in 1997, including the Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama, Palazzo Carignano, Palazzo Chiablese, Reggia di Venaria, Villa della Regina, Castello del Valentino, Castello di Rivoli, Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, Basilica di Superga, and Castello Ducale di Agliè.

City museums

Turin is also known for having many museums, and of these, the Egyptian Museum and the National Cinema Museum are among the most visited.

Egyptian Museum

Renovated in April 2015, it is considered, due to the value of the exhibits, the most important in the world after the one in Cairo. It is housed in the historic Palace of the Academy of Sciences erected in the 17th century by architect Guarino Guarini.

National Cinema Museum

Unique in Italy and among the most important in the world, it is housed inside the Mole Antonelliana symbol of the City of Turin. The museum is also home to a panoramic elevator that makes its run in a single span under the open sky to the “little temple” from which to view the panorama of the city.

Royal Palace of Venaria Reale

On the outskirts of Turin stands one of the most important Savoy residences in Piedmont. At the foot of the Lanzo Valleys and abutting the woods of La Mandria Park, a favorite hunting ground of the Savoy family, shines the Reggia di Venaria Reale, an imposing complex of halls, galleries and apartments, gardens, fountains and water features, and perspectives.

Seventeenth-century atmospheres come alive in the centerpiece of the Palace: the Hall of Diana. Court life in the multimedia fresco created by director Peter Greenaway and in the private apartments of the Savoy sovereigns. The 18th century in the parade route of the Palace of Kings.

You can be enchanted by the infinite perspectives offered by the architecture of the Rondo of Seasons or the Flower Garden, or you can stroll along the palace’s avenues and through its seemingly never-ending gardens.

La Mandria Park

La Mandria Park is the former hunting reserve of the House of Savoy. Near Turin, just 20 minutes from the hotel, and stretches from the gardens of the Royal Palace of Venaria Reale to the foothills of the Alps.

It is the largest fenced park in Italy and the second largest in Europe. You can explore its more than three thousand hectares on foot, by horse and carriage, by bicycle or with park guides.

At La Mandria you will find trails for trekking and nordic walking. The park is home to deer, wild boar, fallow deer, foxes and hares in the wild and semi-wild state. You can spend a long day in contact with nature or you can discover La Mandria Castle, a Savoy residence from the second half of the 19th century that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nature, the Canavese, the Alps.

Canavese still belongs to the province of Turin, but it is like a world of its own. A land of rolling hills and fertile plains, lakes and castles, high peaks and natural parks, Canavese lies north of the capital city.

Its most important center is Ivrea, a city of Celtic origin known for its historic carnival where the characteristic Battle of the Oranges is based.

A short distance away is the town of Agliè, an ancient medieval village with the Baroque church of Santa Marta and the Ducal Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.

Valperga is home to the Sanctuary of Belmonte, from which a view of the Canavese and Turin hills is possible.

The area of Caluso and Lake Candia is the land of Erbaluce wines. It is here that one of the few DOCG white wines of the Italian peninsula is produced. Also suggestive is the lake of Viverone, the third largest lake in Piedmont.

If you are a lover of long walks, trekking, or enjoy admiring the view from the snow-capped mountains and skiing in picturesque places, you cannot miss the Graian Alps with the nearby Lanzo Valleys, Susa Valley, and Gran Paradiso National Park.
